What is disc golf?

Disc golf is an outdoor sport played with special flying discs. The goal is to complete the course in as few throws as possible. A course usually has nine or eighteen holes, and at the end of each hole stands a metal basket that you need to hit with the disc. Each subsequent throw is made from the spot where the disc landed.

This is a sport that's easy to learn. At its core is one simple motion — throwing the disc. Disc golf is played by people of all ages and suits every fitness level. To get started, all you need is a single disc costing 10 to 20 EUR.

Disc golf basics

The principles are simple, but like any sport, there are plenty of nuances that help you understand the game more deeply. On this page you'll find the essentials: how to start, what types of discs there are, where to find courses, plus articles and videos. In Latvia, disc golf is officially represented within the Latvian Sports Federations Council, and the system is managed by the Latvian Disc Golf Federation.

Why play disc golf?

Freely accessible

Latvia has more than 30 public disc golf courses. All of them are free to play, and most are just a few kilometres from the larger cities.

Cheap to start

Your first disc costs around 10 EUR. You don't need expensive gear or a club membership to head out to the course today.

For every age

Disc golf is played by children from age six all the way to seniors. A great way to spend time with friends or family.

Healthy and outdoors

A round of eighteen baskets means a four- to six-kilometre walk in the fresh air. While playing, you barely notice you've covered that distance.

Three steps to start playing

Find closest course

Latvia has more than 30 public disc golf courses. The bigger ones take about two hours to play, the smaller and more beginner-friendly ones 30 to 45 minutes. Some courses also offer disc rental.

Prepare your equipment

For your first game, a single mid-range disc is enough. An even easier start is a beginner set with three discs — one from each category. You'll find beginner-friendly discs in our store using the beginner filter.

Get to know the gameplay

The basic principle is simple: hit every basket on the course in as few throws as possible. Each subsequent throw is made from the spot where the disc landed. Start with the basic rules. It's best to play your first round with a more experienced player. If you don't know one, get in touch with us.

Types of disc golf discs

Disc golf discs are divided into four categories based on their flight characteristics. To better understand what the numbers on a disc mean and how they affect flight, read the disc parameters explained.

Drivers

Distance drivers have the greatest potential to travel far. To make use of that potential, you need a high throwing speed. Their rims are wide and sharp. For beginners and players with slower arm speed, these discs are usually not the best choice.

Fairway drivers

Fairway drivers have a slightly narrower rim than distance drivers and are easier to control thanks to their lower flight speed. An excellent choice for stable trajectories and straight throws. For beginners, this is usually the best category to start with.

Midrange discs

Midrange discs have smaller rims that sit comfortably in the hand and a deeper inner rim. They're versatile — good for both long and short throws, and they usually fly straight and predictably. This is the disc most often recommended as a beginner's first.

Putters

Putters are the deepest and slowest discs, with the thinnest rims. They're designed for throwing into the basket, but thanks to their straight flight they also work well for approach shots and drives through narrow gaps. The lower speed means less deviation from the line, and the depth helps the discs stop more quickly after landing.

Those are the disc golf disc parameters that describe its flight characteristics. Speed, from 1 to 14, indicates the disc's distance potential. Glide, from 1 to 7, reflects its ability to stay in the air. Turn, from -1 to 5, describes stability. Fade, from 0 to 5, indicates the disc's tendency to veer sideways as its flight speed runs out.

The price is mainly determined by the plastic the disc is made from, as well as the design. Discs bearing the names of professional athletes tend to be more expensive, as part of the proceeds supports the athlete's career.

Most likely the discs you've chosen are currently too stable for you. That means your throwing technique and power haven't yet developed enough for these discs to reach their intended distance. Discs are classified as understable, stable, and overstable. Beginners are advised to start with understable discs. You can read more in the section on disc parameters.

The flatter the disc, the less the wind affects it. Glide is the parameter that reflects the disc's lift, which is directly related to its depth. The lower the glide rating, the smaller the wind's effect. It's also worth remembering that the wind's impact depends on its direction.

No. A disc's speed rating describes its aerodynamics and how quickly it can cut through the air. Flight distance, however, depends directly on the player's throwing technique and power. If a disc isn't thrown at the appropriate speed, it will drop quickly and won't reach its potential. Beginner-friendly discs are built to fly well even at lower speeds. You'll find them in this category.

Every disc is unique, even ones made from the same mould. Flight is affected by shape, plastic, weight, manufacturing and cooling temperature, outdoor temperature, storage conditions, wear, and throwing power and technique. A feel for a disc's flight develops only through playing a lot and regularly.

One disc costs 10 to 20 EUR, a bag 20 to 40 EUR. A full set with three discs and a bag costs around 50 to 80 EUR. To make it easier, we've put together beginner sets that already include everything you need.

Yes. With warm clothing and gloves, disc golf can be played all year round. In the cold, softer premium-plastic discs work better, as standard plastic becomes more brittle at low temperatures.

A smaller 9-basket course can be played in 30 to 45 minutes. A full 18-basket round usually takes one and a half to two and a half hours, depending on the size of the course and the number of players in the group.

Scoring is counted by the number of throws needed to hit the basket. 'Par' is the expected number of throws for a given hole. 'Birdie' means one throw fewer, 'bogey' one more. An 'ace' is hitting the basket with your first throw — disc golf's greatest achievement on a single hole. For a full explanation of how scoring works and what other rules apply, read the Disc golf rules section.

No. Public disc golf courses in Latvia are freely accessible to everyone, and playing is free. Joining a club is worthwhile if you want to compete regularly and be part of the more active community in your city.
