Discraft Prototype Ares - Paul McBeth Signature Series
How do I read the numbers and stability?
How fast the disc has to be thrown to fly as designed. Beginners: up to 7. Without a strong arm, a faster disc will simply drop to the left and won't fly far.
How long the disc stays up in the air. A higher number means more distance with less effort. 5–7 works well for beginners.
High-speed turn. How much the disc turns to the right early in the flight (right-handed backhand). For beginners −1 to −3 is better: this turn to the right offsets the natural drop to the left of a beginner's throw, so the disc flies straighter.
Low-speed fade. How sharply the disc hooks to the left and drops at the end of the flight. For beginners 0–2 is more predictable and keeps more distance.
Despite how it sounds, understable does not mean a bad or unpredictable flight. Stability is relative to the power of the throw.
An understable disc is made to turn right on a powerful throw. On a beginner's softer throw, this tendency evens out the natural drop to the left, and the disc flies straight.
On a beginner's throw, a stable or overstable disc will drop to the left straight away and won't fly far. Once your throw gets stronger, you can move on to more stable discs.
Beginners: the first 6 months, still learning the basics of the throw. Amateurs: play regularly, with a developed technique. Advanced players: experienced players with a powerful, consistent throw.
Paul McBeth's prototype Ares — the Zeus 2.0 has officially been renamed! A modified, slightly more overstable version of the Zeus has been born, and after a series of test throws at the 2026 Disc East event it is now available to the wider public.
What started as the much-discussed Zeus 2.0 has officially become the Ares — a distance driver made for players who wanted more torque resistance from the Zeus without giving up a comfortable grip and the ability to shape different lines. The early test runs quickly became a coveted item among professionals and everyday players alike. This disc is valued for its extra stability, a strong finish and its ability to drive forward without straying from its line.
Now that momentum becomes official. The Ares keeps the familiar feel in the hand and the high-speed profile players loved in the Zeus, but delivers a more overstable, torque-resistant flight suited to powerful throws, difficult weather and maximum-distance shots. This is the disc players reach for when they want to throw aggressively without sacrificing reliability. Whether it is released on a flex line or thrown hard and straight, the Ares is built to drive forward and finish the flight with confidence. Where the Zeus raised a question, the Ares gives the answer.
